Climate and Nature Partnership Project

In 2024, we received a Climate and Nature Partnership Grant from Westmorland & Furness Council, in partnership with Sustainabilty Staveley (SENS).

This will allow us to move forward with lots of important plans, from designating and improving green spaces around the Parish, to working with young people and doing a feasibility study on introducing more local transport options.

We Have Secured Funding for Nine Projects

  • Green & Open Spaces

In collaboration with Sustainable Staveley (SENS), we’ll generate community participation to better understand the green spaces we have in Staveley and Ings – both the ones already in use and potential new spaces.

  • Alec Row

Alec Row, on Staveley’s main street, is in the process of being transformed into an attractive community area, with car parking, recycling and a recreational space.

  • The Green Gateway

We’re exploring ways alongside Sustainable Staveley (SENS) to green the ‘gateway’ to Staveley, entering from the Windermere direction, to create a welcoming feel to the village and boost biodiversity.

  • Skills & Repair Café

The Westmorland & Furness Council funding will allow us to continue our well-established Skills & Repair Cafés throughout 2024.

SENS volunteers offer a range of ‘fixing’ skills from sewing to engineering, encouraging people to fix and re-use, not recycle or throw away.

SENS has supported local people to acquire PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) qualifications. Young people are encouraged to come along to learn basic fixing skills.

A simple hot meal is provided for everyone who attends. The café is well-established, with very positive feedback.

  • Community Composting

This project aims to encourage more people to compost and significantly reduce the amount of compostable materials going into black/green bins, thus cutting greenhouse gases (GHGs) and other costs; to spread the word about composting and peat destruction; and to reduce the use of packaged commercial composts.

More bins will be installed around the school for use by both school and community. Families and businesses will be involved, and the project will be led and supported by a Master Composter.

  • Community Ebike Scheme

Sustainable Staveley has supported the initial phase of a community Ebikes scheme, which will be self-supporting in 2-3 years.

Grant funding from Westmorland & Furness Council will cover insurance costs for the next 12 months as the scheme develops.

  • Increasing community engagement with environmental Projects

Efficient, targeted communications are key to community engagement and volunteer support, and to the delivery of the Staveley with Ings Community Plan.

The aim is to link the SENS website to the Staveley with Ings Community website, that includes information about the Community plan, the Parish council and an information hub that will link volunteers with opportunities. The funding will also cover the redesign of the SENS website which includes the Clean River Kent Campaign.

Many people choose not to use IT, and other methods of communication are crucial, including noticeboards. Community noticeboards will be reviewed and improved, to ensure that we are able to communicate with those who do not use IT.

  • A feasibility study for additional environmentally friendly community transport

This project will explore the needs and solutions for local sustainable transport to remove barriers to community participation.

The funding will cover an initial period of research, including reviewing relevant good practice elsewhere, followed by a period of engagement with local people to understand more about what they would like to do but can’t, and the barriers which prevent their participation.

The ideas which emerge from this consultation will be pulled together to generate a shortlist of possible solutions for further discussion and then a plan for implementation.

  • Young People for Young People

When young people leave our local primary school, they move to a range of schools outside the parish, so it is hard for them to maintain a connection with the local community.

If young people are to stay active participants in village life and appreciate and protect their local environment, they need to have regular opportunities to meet and socialise as well as having focused projects to participate in.

The funding will provide a meeting place, refreshments and input from a member of the Cumbria Wildlife Trust for two initial drop-in sessions. It will then provide a youth worker to help young people form a youth forum that takes developments forward.

This project is designed to continue beyond the initial 12-month funding period, and the youth forum will be encouraged to apply for the longer-term funding for activities that help them engage with local nature/climate initiatives and maintain social opportunities in the Parish.

All members of the community are invited to join one or more projects, if you would like more information see our partnership website Click here
