The story so far
It all started when year 6 at Staveley CE Primary school (now in year 8 in secondary school) told the Community Plan Group they wanted a chill out space in the village.
But where’d we get the money? Staveley Parish Council and SENS (Sustainable Staveley) applied for some money from Westmorland and Furness Climate and Nature Partnership fund. We asked for money to establish a Youth Forum where young people could meet, enjoy themselves and express their views. We were successful.
Then we ran the Pizza Pop up and 38 young people came along and agreed that they needed a chill-out space to meet and connect. As well as giving us loads of other ideas.
Toni and Lizzy from U-4-X (Euphoric Circus) agreed to help us.
The Friday drop-in was born on 20 September at Staveley Pavillion so we could try and include as many of the young peoples ideas as we could. It includes creative, fun challenges and sporting activities as well as a focus on environmental projects. Danni, from the Cumbria Wildlife Trust is often at the drop-in and showcases some of her work.
Staveley with Ings Parish Council gave us money for two additional drop-ins so we can keep going until Christmas.
Young leaders and adults have volunteered to support the drop-in. THANKS!
What Next?
We want to make the drop-in even better
SOME IDEAS
More plants, Lego, making stress toys, games, activities and sports on the field, speakers for the music, stuff in the woods, park and around the village, skate park , rounders on the field, food activities , comfy seats
and much, much more.
Unless we can raise more money the drop-in will finish at the end at Christmas.
SO
We’re going to apply for a grant from The Better Tomorrows fund run by the Community Fund.
Help?
If we get the Better Tomorrows grant it will only be for a youth worker to organise and plan .
We’ll still need money for equipment refreshments and consumables.
We need volunteers to help on the day and with admin.
MOST OF ALL we need support from the SVA to ensure that we have a suitable room that we can afford and somewhere to store our stuff.
Who’s Who?
Euphoric Circus (U4X)
We are a charitable incorporated organisation that promotes the physical and social-emotional wellbeing of young people aged 5-25, through a range of programmes and projects linking them up with their communities. We use social circus as a platform to empower young people and boost their confidence in all areas, while ensuring these young people have access to the support they need.
Our Mission: Empowering Youth Through Circus Arts.
At Euphoric Circus, our mission is simple yet profound: to empower young individuals through the transformative power of circus arts. We believe in providing a platform where every youth can discover their unique talents, build essential life skills, have access to trained youth workers, and foster a sense of belonging within their community. Through engaging workshops, mentorship programs, and creative expression, we aim to inspire confidence, resilience, and a lifelong passion for learning. Join us as we harness the magic of circus to shape a brighter future for today's youth.
Lizzy, Toni and a number of volunteers are running our Friday Drop-in Sessions.
Cumbria Wildlife Trust
Danni Chalmers, Staveley Woodlands Officer for CWT, has ran a series of nature sessions to get us started after attending the initial youth drop in sessions earlier in the year.
There are already Young Ranger sessions that happen monthly in the local woodlands, these sessions help young people engage with conservation and their local world while also building skills for life.
We did activities like, bug hunting, river dipping and analysyis, putting up bird and bat boxes, fixing footpaths and clearing up storm damage. Some sessions were better attended than others, this was mainly due to the weather conditions through the summer holidays, some days were wetter than wet!
Danni Chalmers - CWT Staveley Woodlands Officer
“As the Staveley Woodlands Officer I am committed to making sure the community of Staveley get involved with the management of the fantastic woodlands they helped save. A big part of this is helping the young people learn about why conserving these special habitats is so important. Over the years I have worked here one of the highlights have been how enthused our young rangers have been when out in the woods each month and seeing school groups mesmerised learning about the temperate rainforest. Helping to set up the youth group and doing activities at some of the sessions really helps establish that link between Cumbria Wildlife Trust and members of the community that we might not have been able to connect with before. Hopefully it will then lead to more young rangers going us in the woods each month too.”
